In September 2017 he started a feud against Aleister Black , which ended with a match at PPV NXT TakeOver: WarGames on November 18, 2017 with a victory for Black. In this match he injured himself, which is why he had to pause for some time. After that, he regularly took part in major NXT events and established himself as one of the audience favorites.

On January 27, 2019, he won a match against Tyler Bate in the finals of the Worlds Collide Tournament , which secured him a later NXT title match of his choice. He chose a match for the NXT North American Championship , which he also won by Johnny Gargano in the NXT edition of February 20, 2019, which was recorded on January 30, 2019 . He was allowed to hold this title until the NXT edition on September 18, 2019, when he lost it to Roderick Strong after several successful title defenses .

After another injury-related hiatus, he returned on February 5, 2020 and started a feud with The Undisputed Era . This resulted in a title match for the NXT Championship , which was held as a cinematic backlot brawl on NXT TakeOver: In Your House . In this match, however, Velveteen Dream was defeated by the reigning champion Adam Cole , whom he was no longer allowed to challenge for the title according to an agreement made before the match.
