Vera King (* 1960 in Schramberg , Baden-Württemberg ) is a German sociologist and social psychologist . She has been Professor of Sociology and Social Psychology at Goethe University Frankfurt since 2016 and Director of the Sigmund Freud Institute in Frankfurt am Main .

Career

After studying sociology, psychology and educational science, Vera King received her doctorate in 1994 from the University of Frankfurt am Main on the significance of Freud's case history, the “fragment of a hysteria analysis” in the process of theory development in psychoanalysis. In 2002 she completed her habilitation on “The Emergence of the New in Adolescence. Individuation, Generativity and Gender in Modernized Societies ”with the Venia legendi for Sociology and accepted a position at the University of Hamburg . From 2002 to 2016 she was a professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Hamburg with a focus on socialization and development research. In March 2016 she took over the professorship for sociology and psychoanalytic social psychology at the Goethe University in Frankfurt in connection with the position of director at the Sigmund Freud Institute . Since November 2016 she has been Managing Director of the Sigmund Freud Institute in Frankfurt am Main.

Vera King's research and publications focus in particular on the analysis of connections between social conditions and individual developments, between culture and psyche. For this purpose she has projects u. a. carried out and published in the field of youth and adolescence research, family and generation research as well as social-psychological cultural analyzes. The volume 'Female Adolescence', published in 1992 with Karin Flaake , combined social and cultural studies analyzes with developmental and psychoanalytic perspectives. In later work she examined the importance of youth / adolescence and the 'adolescent space of opportunity' for biographical and cultural developments. In particular, she worked out the intergenerational dynamics of adolescence and developed a concept of generativity at the intersection of subject and cultural theory. Research into the significance of intergenerational relationships is also the subject of studies on families and psychosocial developments of parents, children and adolescents in the context of migration and flight. Vera King also researches the psychosocial and psychological consequences of optimization dynamics, changed time relationships and digitalization . She is u. a. Spokeswoman for the transdisciplinary research projects' Aporias for Perfection in Accelerated Modernity 'and the project' The measured life. Productive and counterproductive consequences of digitally quantifying optimization ', which she heads together with Benigna Gerisch and Hartmut Rosa (funded by the Volkswagen Foundation in the funding line' Key Topics for Science and Society '). In each case, cultural and organizational changes are examined with a view to their meanings and consequences for biographical processes, for psychological forms of coping and patterns of lifestyle.

Functions

Vera King is co-editor of the magazines Psyche and Psychosozial . She is a scientific adviser to the International Psychoanalytic University Berlin (IPU), the Medical Academy for Psychotherapy of Children and Adolescents, a member of the 'Comité scientifique international of the Association Internationale Interactions de la Psychanalyse (A2IP)' and a scientific adviser to various specialist journals, among others. a. the journal Diskurs Kindheits- und Jugendforschung, the journal Familiendynamik , the journal Kinder- und Jugend-Psychotherapie (KJP), on the Editorial Board of the Childhood Vulnerability Journal.
