action

Fifteen years ago, Seo-Jin, Ha-kyung's daughter, was kidnapped and killed. Commissioner Cheong-ho was in charge of the investigation but was unable to resolve the case. Now he tells Ha-kyung that the statute of limitations expires in five days. At the place where the daughter died, he finds a flower and concludes that it was taken by the kidnapper at the time. Under time pressure, Cheong-ho does everything possible to find him before the deadline. He evaluates the images from the traffic camera and a dashcam , compares the tire prints with those of other cars and pursues a suspect - without success. After the deadline, Cheong-ho resignedly burns all documents relating to the case.

Bom, a little girl, is kidnapped from a playground. Her mother and grandfather call the police and receive a ransom note for $ 50,000 over the phone. They also receive a picture of Bom, which is supposed to be proof of their liveliness. Shortly afterwards, Grandfather Han-chul disappears without a trace. The investigators, led by Commissioner Kang, discover parallels to the kidnapping case from 15 years ago and turn to Cheong-ho. The money transfer is scheduled for the next day at 12 noon at a train station. The kidnapper, disguised as a member of the army, manages to get away from a group of soldiers with the money. The police are pursuing the perpetrator and arresting him. It's Han-chul. Han-chul says that the kidnapper forced him to collect the money after he was lured into a warehouse and locked up. A tape in which the voice of Boms can be heard acted as a lure. However, since the picture of Bom was taken in Han-chul's apartment and the kidnapper's voice when he demanded a ransom (recorded with a tape) is identical to Han-chul's, Kang does not believe his words and has him arrested.

When Cheong-ho noticed discrepancies, he had a technician analyze the voices from the tapes. He states that the kidnapper's voice corresponds to the mother of the victim from 15 years ago (Ha-kyung) and the voice of the grandfather corresponds to that of the kidnapper from 15 years ago. Cheong-ho then drives to Ha-kyung and finds her and Bom. Ha-kyung admits that she kidnapped Bom in revenge after she found out that Han-chul had kidnapped her daughter - she discovered this by following a lead that had escaped the police. She took Bom's photo at Han-chul's home after locking him in the warehouse. Inspector Cheong-ho takes Bom with him in his car and confronts Han-chul about the kidnapping from 15 years ago, which he initiated to enable his daughter to have an operation. Flashbacks reveal that Cheong-ho was responsible for Seo-jin's death: While handing over the money, he accidentally ran over Seo-jin after she fled Han-chul. Cheong-ho threatens Han-chul to harm Bom if he doesn't confess to the kidnapping of Bom. Han-chul agrees and is sentenced to 15 years in prison.

criticism

Statute of limitations received mostly positive reviews. In the Internet Movie Database , the film received an average of 7.5 stars out of 10. According to the film-dienst , the director succeeds in "enriching a genre that is very popular in South Korea with an advanced narrative style." Uhm Jung-hwa's performance is described as "[b] ravourous". The film magazine Cinema sums it up: "Exciting crime puzzle that captivates the viewer not with excessive cruelty, but with deceitful twists and turns, and at the end presents a perpetrator whom only very few would have thought possible." Kino.de also makes a positive judgment: " Thriller staged with a lot of style, [...] which focuses more on tension and emotions than on action. In addition to the impressive appearance, the figures are also well drawn, which helps over the lack of originality of the child abduction material. The debut is rounded off by good acting performances by Eom Jeong-hwa [...] and Kim Sang-kyung, who are popular in their home country.
