Arild Verner Agerskov "Vern" Mikkelsen (born October 21, 1928 in Fresno , California , † November 21, 2013 in Wayzata , Minnesota ) was an American basketball player who spent the entire ten-year professional career of the Minneapolis Lakers in the NBA played. Mikkelsen is considered to be the first player to embody the modern position of the power forward in the NBA of the 1950s. In this role he was known for excellent defense work and especially his skills as a rebounder . In 1995, Mikkelsen was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame for career achievement .

Career

At the age of 16, Vern Mikkelsen received a scholarship that enabled him to play college basketball at Hamline University in Minnesota . After his senior year at college, Mikkelsen was drafted eleventh in the first round in the 1949 NBA draft by the Minneapolis Lakers. Mikkelsen immediately became part of the front court with the star center George Mikan and Jim Pollard . All three were inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame after their careers. With this team, Mikkelsen won the NBA championship in his first season. In total, the Lakers won five titles with Vern Mikkelsen.

After ten career years, Mikkelsen resigned as an active player in 1959. During this time he achieved a total of 10,063 points and 5,940 rebounds, which corresponds to a career average of 14.4 points and 8.5 rebounds. At the time, Mikkelsen was only the sixth player in NBA history to hit the 10,000 career point mark. In addition, he only missed five of 704 league games. At the end of the 1960s, Mikkelsen briefly acted as general manager of the ABA club Minnesota Pipers and as the team's transition coach.

Style of play

Mikkelsen built a reputation as a tough defender. He led the NBA three times in a row in the number of fouls committed per season. To date, Mikkelsen holds the record of a total of 127 disqualifications over the entire period of his career.
