The administration of the Bischöfliche Weingüter Trier is a winery on the Moselle , Saar and Ruwer . This goes back to the amalgamation of three important, centuries-old wineries and former founding members of the VDP Mosel (Großer Ring) in 1966: the Bischöfliche Konvikt (since 1840), the Episcopal Seminary (since 1773) and the Hohe Domkirche (since 1851). In 2004 the 25 hectare Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium winery also became the property of the Bischöfliche Weingüter; it will be continued as an independent winery.

The approximately 95 hectare cultivation area of the Bischöfliche Weingüter Trier includes shares in prime locations in the cultivation region, including on the Moselle Dhroner Hofberger (4.2 hectares) and Piesporter Goldtröpfchen (1.5 hectares), along the Saar Scharzhofberger (6.3 hectares) , Kanzemer Altenberg (5.9 ha) and Ayler Kupp (10.2 ha) as well as Kaseler Nieschen (3.1 ha) on the Ruwer. With almost 90 percent, the focus of cultivation is on Riesling . In addition, vines of the varieties Frühburgunder , Spätburgunder , St. Laurent and Regent are grown.

The grapes from the 60 hectares of vineyards on the Saar are pressed on the Scharzhof, those from Mosel and Ruwer on the Duisburger Hof on the Ruwer. The wines are matured in spacious cellars in the center of Trier.

The wines

The assortment of the winery ranges from simple grape variety wines to river wines, which depict the special characteristics of the individual river valleys, and local wines in the classic Mosel-Kabinett style to wines from famous individual sites such as Scharzhofberger , Dhroner Hofberger or Kaseler Nies'chen . Sparkling wine is also produced using the classic bottle fermentation method.

Manufacturing

In their self-portrayal, the Bischöfliche Weingüter Trier name the preservation of traditional techniques, sustainable viticulture and respect for nature as the top priority in the production of their wines. Only organic fertilizers are used for fertilization, 80 percent of which is harvested and selected by hand. Forty percent of the wines are pressed in "fuders", the traditional 1,000 liter wooden barrels. The remaining grapes would be vinified in stainless steel tanks. The cellars of the winery in the center of Trier extend over about 30,000 m² and can be traced back to the year 600. A historic Roman aqueduct runs through the oldest part, leading directly to the Imperial Baths .

The Duisburger Hof in Eitelsbach, which is owned by the Bischöflicher Konvikt, still serves as a wine press house for all grapes that are harvested on the Moselle and Ruwer.
