reception

For Andy Hamilton, who reviewed the album in the Jazz Journal , Plays Victor Young (2017) and the subsequent album Eye Contact (2018) showed "the art of jazz guitar of the superlatives." According to Derek Taylor (Dusted) some of Young's pieces are Part of the Juris repertoire for years and are valued for their variable form and variability of the harmonic content. Juris varies predictable parameters of his playing by engaging in a duet with bassist Jay Anderson ("Beautiful Love"), drummer Anthony Pinciotti ("Stella By Starlight") and singer Kate Baker ("My Foolish Heart").

Howard Mandel wrote on Down Beat , “ Vic Plays Victor Young is a sensitive, melodically exploring album with standards and rare cover versions , as you would expect from an experienced ensemble with a compatible repertoire. Juris is deceptively cautious and, alone and in cooperation, brings out the dreamy melancholy of Young's subjects. His flawless touch of both the electric and acoustic instruments, his brilliant tone, the gracefully swinging beat and the elegant phrasing as well as the modesty of the album - no extreme size, just dedicated creativity. "Each piece seems as intimate as the interpretation of " My Foolish Heart " by guest singer Kate Baker, on which she is only supported by the guitarist.
