Victor Fehr

Victor Fehr (born May 29, 1846 in St. Gallen ; † January 21, 1938 in Warth TG ) was a Swiss landowner and politician .

Victor Fehr, the son of the St. Gallen banker and businessman Edmund Fehr, studied from 1864 to 1866 at the Agricultural Academy in Bonn , where he became a member of the Corps Hansea Bonn and - after his father paid for 308,000 francs for him in autumn 1867 Ittingen Charterhouse and 100 hectares of forest, vineyards and arable fields - in Zurich . There he was a member of the Corps Tigurinia . Victor Fehr and his family lived in the rooms on the first floor of the south wing of the former monastery, which had previously served the prior .

Fehr converted the former monastery in Ittingen into a model farm. In 1869 he traveled to England to find out about the latest technical advances. He placed orders and took over the sale of agricultural machinery for an English manufacturer. He was the first in Switzerland to use a combine and steam threshing machine in 1872/73 . In 1901, Fehr also acquired the Steinegg Castle Estate .

Fehr became a co-founder (1882) and longstanding Vice-President (1882–1912) and President (1912–1932) of the Society of Swiss Farmers . In 1897 he was a co-founder of the Swiss Farmers' Union , of which he was a member of the board from 1897 to 1938. He also initiated the intercantonal school for fruit growing, viticulture and horticulture in Wädenswil and the agricultural school of the canton of Thurgau .

From 1884 to 1920 Fehr was a member of the Thurgau Grand Council as a member of the Liberals . Fehr was in favor of protective tariffs , but against direct subsidies for the farmers.

On September 4, 1912, the German Emperor Wilhelm II. Viktor Fehr visited the Ittingen Charterhouse from September 4 to 8, 1912 during the imperial maneuver. For the imperial convenience, the host built in the Charterhouse's first water toilet with flushing device, which was still a rarity in Switzerland at that time.

In 1931 the ETH Zurich awarded Fehr an honorary doctorate . In the Swiss Army he last served as colonel and brigade commander of the cavalry.
