Victor Karl Jernstedt ( Russian Виктор Карлович Ернштедт , born December 2 . Jul / 14. December  1854 greg. In St. Petersburg ; † August 8 jul. / 21st August  1902 greg. ) Was a Russian classical philologist and Byzantinist .

Life

Victor Jernstedt's family came from Sweden. He attended the Wiedemann private school and studied from 1871 to 1875 at the State University of Saint Petersburg , where he was influenced in particular by the philologists Karl Lugebil and Feodor Feodorowitsch Sokolow ; he was also in contact with August Nauck . After completing his studies, Jernstedt went on an extensive educational and research trip to England, where he studied Greek manuscripts in the libraries in London , Oxford and Cambridge . In doing so, he collected rich material on the tradition and textual criticism of the Attic speakers . After his return to St. Petersburg he taught Latin and Greek at the Progymnasium and from 1877 at the university. In 1880 he became a study on the history of transmission of the speeches of Andokides , Isaeus , Dinarchus , antiphon and Lycurgus the master's degree . Shortly afterwards he published a critical edition of the speeches of the Antiphon.

Further research trips took Jernstedt to Italy and Greece, where he acquired knowledge of archeology and epigraphy and dealt with the Byzantine and modern Greek language and culture. As a result, his research interests shifted more and more to Byzantine Studies . Back in St. Petersburg Jernstedt was in 1883 appointed as Lecturer in 1884 and an associate professor of Greek, after all, after his promotion to Dr. phil. (1891) as full professor.

Jernstedt also developed its effect beyond the university circles. From 1891 he was editor of the ancient language section of the Journal of the Ministry of Public Enlightenment and secretary of the Imperial Russian Archaeological Society . May 1, 1893, appointed him Imperial Academy of Sciences for adjuncts , on December 5, 1898. Extraordinary Member.

Victor Jernstedt published several essays on Greek literature (Attic speakers and comedy: Menander ) as well as critical editions, including the Strategikon by Kekänkeos (1896) and Michael Andreopoulos ' translation of the stories of Sindbad (posthumously 1912).

His son was the coptologist Pjotr ​​Jernstedt (1890-1966).
