The Vieira Spring monkey ( Plecturocebus vieirai , Syn .: Callicebus vieirai ) is a primate species from the subfamily of the Spring monkeys within the family of the Sakia monkeys (Pitheciidae) that was only described in 2012 . The species was named after Carlos Octaviano da Cunha Vieira (1897-1958), a mammalogen (mammal scientist) and curator of the mammal collection in the Museu de Zoologia of the Universidade de São Paulo from 1941 to 1958.
distribution and habitat
The species is only known from three separate areas in northern Mato Grosso and Pará . The four type specimens were caught on the Teles Pires and Rio Iriri rivers . The third area in which no specimens were caught, but only a female and a male were sighted, is near the small town of Juína in northwestern Mato Grosso. The habitat in which the holotype was caught is a tropical, evergreen rainforest with lianas and medium-sized (about 20 m) and some large trees (30 to 35 m). The undergrowth is relatively dense, the forest floor is thick. Showy Buriti palms ( Mauritia flexuosa ) grow in nearby swamps .
features
The Vieira spring monkey is a medium-sized species from the Plecturocebus moloch group with a light, gray-brown coloration on the head, neck, back, tail and top of arms and legs and hair shaped by the agouti pattern. Hands, feet and tip of the tail are white, throat and belly side are orange. The Vieira Spring monkey differs from other species of the Plecturocebus moloch group by the white hair around its dark face.
