Identifying features

The multi-flowered grove grows densely grassed to clumpy , so does not form runners, and is about 15 to 40 cm tall. The upright inflorescence is composed of clearly stalked spikelets . The perigone of each individual flower is pale yellowish brown, then almost always brown in color with age. The outer tepals are up to 3.8 mm long and have a narrow or wide skin edge. The anthers are about twice as long as the stamens . The stylus is no longer than 1 mm, with the approximately 2 mm long scars falling off quickly. The basal leaves are about 3.5 mm wide. The seeds have an appendage about 0.5 mm long.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24, less often 12, 14, 28, 36.

Occurrence

Luzula multiflora mostly colonizes fresh to moist sandy and silicate grasslands. It has its main occurrence in the plant formation of the dwarf shrub heaths and nebulas and a secondary occurrence in light, acidic deciduous and coniferous forests with nutrient-poor soils. It can also be found in heaths, on extensively used wet meadows and in fens . In terms of plant sociology, it can best be assigned to the order Atropetalia, the order Caricetalia fuscae and the class Molinio-Arrhenatheretea . The plant is moderately common all over Germany. Their distribution area is circumpolar in the northern and southern hemispheres.

  • Luzula multiflora subsp. frigida (Buchenau) VIKrecz .: It occurs from northern Europe to western Siberia and from subarctic North America to the northeastern United States.
  • Luzula multiflora subsp. hibernica Kirschner & TCGRich: It occurs in Ireland.
  • Luzula multiflora subsp. monticola Kirschner: It occurs in the central and eastern Pyrenees of Spain.
  • Luzula multiflora subsp. multiflora : It occurs in the subarctic and temperate zones of the northern hemisphere.
  • Luzula multiflora subsp. sibirica VIKrecz .: It occurs from Central Asia to China and Far Eastern Asiatic Russia.
  • Luzula multiflora subsp. snogerupii Kirschner: It occurs in Bulgaria and Greece.
