Content and origin

In the song, a young person is instructed to slow down and come to their senses. The chorus is "When will you realize, Vienna waits for you?" ( "When will you realize that Vienna is waiting for you"). Joel wrote the song on a visit to his father's home in Vienna when the two of them watched an elderly woman sweeping the street. A philosophical discussion developed about age and the compulsion to achieve life goals as quickly as possible, as Joel explained on the Howard Stern Show . In a July 2008 article in the New York Times , Joel named Vienna as one of his two favorite songs, along with Summer, Highland Falls .

The song was played in an episode of the television series Taxi in 1981 entitled Vienna Waits .
