Viktor Rudi Avbelj (born February 26, 1914 in Pervoje , Austria-Hungary , today: Slovenia ; † April 3, 1993 in Ljubljana ) was a Yugoslav politician of the Union of Communists of Yugoslavia (BdKJ), who among other things was Prime Minister between 1962 and 1965 as well from 1979 to 1984 was President of the Socialist Republic of Slovenia .

Life

Viktor Rudi Avbelj graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Ljubljana , which he graduated in 1939. In 1937 he joined the Communist Party of Yugoslavia (KPJ). During the Second World War he joined in Krain of the People's Liberation Army in November (Narodnooslobodilačka vojska) of Josip Broz Tito , and was between 26 March and 7 May 1945 Political Commissar of November of Slovenia. From 1955 to 1962 he served as Vice-Chairman of the Executive Council and thus as Deputy Prime Minister of Slovenia and temporarily as Chairman of the Socialist League of the Working People of Slovenia (Socialistična zveza delovnega ljudstva Slovenije) .

As the successor to Boris Kraigher , he took over the post of chairman of the Executive Council of the Socialist Republic of Slovenia on June 25, 1962 and was therefore Prime Minister of this republic of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) until his replacement by Janko Smole in April 1965 . In April 1974 he became a member of the Central Committee (ZK) of the League of Communists of Slovenia .

In May 1979 Avbelj became a member of the Presidium of the People's Assembly and at the same time replaced Sergej Kraigher as President of the Presidium of the People's Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Slovenia in May 1979 and was President of Slovenia until May 7, 1984, after which France Popit succeeded him. At the same time he was President of the National Defense Council of the Presidium of the People's Assembly of Slovenia from May 1980 to June 1983. In June 1983 he took over the post of Deputy President of the Committee for People's Defense and Social Self-Protection of the Slovenian People's Assembly.

Avbelj has received several awards for his services, including the Order of the People's Hero , the Order of the Hero of Socialist Labor, the Partisan Star, the Order of Brotherhood and Unity, the National Order of Merit, the Order of Bravery and the 1941 Partisan Memorial Medal.
