history

Architect Max Georg Poscharsky acquired the property at Emser Allee 55 in 1894 and in the same year began building the villa he had designed himself. In the following year, he sold the property together with the not yet completed villa to the Bautzen print shop owner Otto Weigang, who used the building as a retirement home. Otto Weigang died in 1914. After the death of her husband, his widow Anna-Sophie Weigang moved back to the Bautzner Villa Wallstrasse 3 and used the Blasewitzer Villa Emser Allee 55 as a summer apartment. Weigang's daughter Lisbeth Schrott lived in the villa from 1922. Weigang's heirs sold the villa to the merchant Friedrich Schlee in 1925, who rented the house to Mrs. Schrott. Schlee later lived in the villa himself. In 1931 the Freitaler Kreditbank is listed as the owner.

The villa was used as a registry office in the GDR and also after its restoration . A jury, which included the President of the Federal Association of German Registrars , awarded the "Wedding Award 2013" on August 8, 2013 and named Villa Goetheallee 55 as "Germany's most beautiful registry office".

Building description

Villa Weigang, detail

The villa has two floors on an almost square base. Compared to other buildings by Poscharsky such as the Blasewitzer Villa Vogesenweg 4, the basic structure of the villa appears more orderly. The elaborate design is based on the German Renaissance .

Since it is on the Goetheallee at the corner of Käthe-Kollwitz-Ufer , the villa has three sides. It is historically designed with a turret, a high gable , a sundial and cluttered niches and, in addition to bay windows and loggias, also has an outside staircase and a wall fountain. Sandstone divides the building. Different window shapes and rich floral plaster painting with tendrils and fruits contribute to the castle-like character of the villa.

The villa was equipped with the latest technology when it was built. It received one of the first steam heaters and central ventilation. Inside, the furnishings and design of the villa have been preserved, with stucco  - among other things, the villa has gilded stucco ceilings -, paintings and the wood paneling were restored from 1991 to 1994. Both the allocation of the rooms and the spacious staircase have been preserved in the original. The stained glass windows with ornaments and a faience fireplace also date from the time it was built.

Originally the villa had a park-like garden plot with rich furnishings. This was reduced in size and only restored in the immediate vicinity of the villa.
