The Village Boys were a German boy group that emerged from the program Village Boys - The Big Lips Casting Show, which was broadcast on TIMM in July 2009 . It was the first casting show in Germany to look for a gay boy band on TV. Before the Village Boys, there was already an attempt in 2003 with the Marilyn's Boys to establish a cast, openly gay boy group in Germany. The group split in March 2010.

Casting at Village Boys - The Big Lips Casting Show

The broadcaster TIMM and Lips , a singing and party game for Xbox 360 , were looking for applicants for the three-part show Village Boys - The Big Lips Casting Show for the four places in the new band Village Boys , the successor to the Village People . The reason for the broadcast was, according to a spokeswoman for TIMM, "the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, which is remembered at the CSD" and the idea of "reviving the village people". The call was made primarily on the TIMM channel and in magazines such as the Victory Column and blu . Interested parties had the opportunity to apply online or with videos they had produced themselves. There were no age or other requirements that had to be met. The heterosexual father of five, Zoschi and Catrin, who competed as the only woman, fought for a place in the band.

The castings took place at the Christopher Street Days in Berlin , Cologne and Munich , with the TIMM car being used as a karaoke stage. From around 250 videos, 12 candidates were shortlisted and competed against each other at the first casting in Berlin. There they had to convince the jury of themselves. This consisted of the singer Ross Antony , the future manager of the band Jim Reeves , the drag queen Nina Queer and Zimmer frei! -Reporter Katja Mitchell. The broadcast was always on Thursdays after the respective casting date. Although the jury was also present at the auditions, they only judged the candidates' appearances during the broadcast. Afterwards, the TV viewers, who could vote by telephone or SMS, decided on the progress. In the first two rounds the three candidates were eliminated, in the last round the two candidates with the fewest calls were eliminated. In addition, the jury awarded a so-called wildcard to a candidate after each round , which promoted them directly to the final. The eliminated candidates and the wildcard winners were replaced in the subsequent auditions by new, successive candidates who fought for a place in the next round.

The live final took place on July 16, 2009 in Berlin. There, the nine remaining candidates were assigned to the three wildcard winners in such a way that they formed three groups of four members each, each performing the song Better the Devil You Know by Kylie Minogue live - which came in 7th in a 2008 survey on the gayest songs was chosen - listed. In the end, the Pierre team , consisting of Pierre Alexandre, Vladimir Gunjić, David Konietzka and Daniel Braun, prevailed against the two other groups.

The Village Boys cast in this way won a record deal with Universal and a trip to New York , the home of the Village People .

Immediately after the live finale, the group - accompanied by the TV station RTL - recorded their version of Better the Devil You Know , which was planned as a debut single , in a recording studio in Hanover . The release took place on August 7th, 2009. Better the Devil You Know did not get past 86th place in the German single charts. There were no further publications in the following period. Already in March 2010 the formation broke up again.
