blu (formerly: sergej ) is a national German gay lifestyle magazine. Even before it was renamed, the magazine was the largest magazine of its kind in Germany.

sergej

The magazine sergej was published by Sergej Medien- und Verlags GmbH in Berlin , appeared monthly and was displayed free of charge in trendy shops , boutiques and clubs.

The magazine was founded in 1997 by Olaf Alp in Berlin. It dealt with topics from lifestyle to culture, scene and sport to politics. The appointment calendar named as scout was one of the most extensive for culture, party and sex. In addition to standing columns, there were record reviews, competitions, book reviews and fashion tips.

The Sergej titles, which were published in Munich ( sergej.münchen ) until June 2007 and continue to be published in Baden-Württemberg and Franconia , were published by their own publishers, independent of Sergej Berlin. In Munich, querformat GmbH published Sergej.München (which has been published independently under the name LEO since July 2007), Sergej Franken and Baden-Württemberg published by Sebastian Spitzkat. sergej Berlin also cooperated with Gegenpol in Leipzig and Dresden . A cooperation with the magazines Hinnerk , gab , rik and EXIT under the name GayCityCom was terminated at the end of June 2007.

renaming

In August 2007 the sergej Berlin renamed itself blu . The new magazine subsequently became a national magazine with regional editions for the metropolitan areas of Berlin, Hamburg , Dresden / Leipzig and Cologne / Ruhr area . The publishing house Sebastian Spitzkat in Bamberg, on the other hand, renamed its magazines in southwest Germany and Franconia from sergej to blu in October 2007 and expanded the publication areas to all of Bavaria and the Rhine-Main area including Frankfurt . Since then, the two publishers have been cooperating with their magazines of the same name.

From January 2009 to around 2010, part of the circulation of blu - in addition to the regional editions that were still free of charge - was distributed nationwide as a paid monthly magazine via newsagents. Of the total print run of 180,000 copies at the time, around 6,000 copies were delivered to the magazine trade as sales copies, but only just under 500 were sold there (Q3 / 2010). The majority of the edition was still given free of charge. No further sales have been reported since the fourth quarter of 2010.

In the second quarter of 2014, the monthly print run was 120,000 copies.

The publisher also owns the glossy retail magazine Mate .

Acquisitions

In June / July 2012 blu took over the competitors GAB (Frankfurt and Rhein-Main / Neckar), EXIT (Düsseldorf) and rik in Cologne. It was announced that the distribution of the previous blu regional edition would be discontinued in the respective areas. In May 2013 blu took over the competitors hinnerk (Hamburg) and Leo (Munich). Blu officially ceased its publication in the respective cities, but since then a magazine controlled by Berlin has been published under the proper names of the acquired titles with an approx. 40-page cover section. Only the regional shares are z. Some of them are still produced on site. The blu appears under this name only in Berlin.

With the June 2017 edition, the founder Olaf Alp handed over the editorial responsibility to Christian Fischer and editor-in-chief Michael Rädel.
