Career

Kähkönen, who started for the Ounasvaaran Hiihtoseura club , started skiing at the age of seven. He made his international debut in December 2001 in the Nordic Combined B-World Cup . In his first competitions he was unsuccessful. At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2002 in Schonach in the Black Forest , he finished 31st in the individual and was ninth with the team in the team competition. At the beginning of the 2002/03 season he managed to win points for the first time in Steamboat Springs with rank 18.

At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2003 in Sollefteå , he was able to improve to 11th place in the Gundersen singles. With the team he ended up in a good sixth place. In the sprint he also finished in the top ten and finished seventh.

On March 14, 2003 he made his debut in the Nordic Combined World Cup in Lahti . There he missed the points as 37th. A day later, he managed to win World Cup points for the first time in the sprint in the same place as 29th. In December 2003 Kähkönen went back to the B-World Cup. At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2004 in Stryn , he reached ninth place in the individual competition. With the team he just missed a medal in fourth.

After further mixed races in the B World Cup, Kähkönen moved permanently to the A national team for the 2006/07 season . From the first World Cup he finished in the points in most races. At his first start in the Team World Cup, he achieved his first podium and his first and only World Cup victory in Lago di Tesero together with Jaakko Tallus , Anssi Koivuranta and Hannu Manninen . At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo , he started in the singles and ended up in 14th place after good performances. After three more points in Lahti and Oslo, he finished his most successful season in 37th place in the overall World Cup standings.

But after he started the 2007/08 season without any points, he went back to the B World Cup for a few races. After scoring a few points there, he came back to the senior squad at the end of January 2008. However, until 2010 he was not able to rank in the points in the World Cup. In the 2010/11 season he switched regularly between the World Cup and the Continental Cup, but remained in both competition series without any great success. He then ended his active career after the season.
