Vincenz Fohmann (with full baptismal name Vincenz Ferrerius Fohmann ; born April 5, 1794 in Assamstadt ( Kurmainz ), † September 25, 1837 in Liège ) was a German doctor , anatomist and author . In his scientific and literary work he specialized in the lymphatic system .

Live and act

Fohmann's time and training in Germany

Fohmann was born on April 5, 1794 in Assamstadt, then part of the Electorate of Mainz , now part of Baden-Württemberg . He grew up there. His father Johann Martin Fohmann (1757–1837), who came from Assamstadt, was known as a bath and doctor in the area. His mother Anna Maria Fohmann (1766-1820), b. Hartmann came from Altkrautheim . Vincenz Fohmann was the fifth of his parents' fifteen children. Nine of his siblings died immediately after their birth.

After his school education, Fohmann studied medicine under Friedrich Tiedemann (1781–1861) at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg , under whose direction he also learned the basics of anatomy and physiology . He married Tiedemann's daughter Kunigunde (born March 3, 1809, Nuremberg † March 23, 1889). Fohmann worked from 1819 to 1826 as an anatomical prosector , that is, as a "dissector" at the Heidelberg anatomy. While working with cadavers , he developed various processes of intervention in the lymphatic system. At the University of Heidelberg, Fohmann prepared with the students in a "dissection course" and was also responsible for the preparation of teaching materials. For this he used all the techniques known at the time. He became famous at the time, especially since he knew how the "Saugadersystem" - known today as the lymphatic system with - is called mercury to inject. During his time in Heidelberg Fohmann published the book "Anatomical Investigations on the Connections of the Suction Arteries with the Veins". This work was followed by other treatises, all of which concern the lymphatic system.

The call to the University of Liège

In 1827 he accepted the offer to follow Jean-Nicolas Comhaire (1778-1837) as professor of anatomy at the University of Liège . Because of his German origins and the corresponding accent, Fohmann was received with a certain reserve and distance at that time. Independently of this, however, he accepted the office of rector from 1833 to 1834. The collection of anatomical specimens was quickly expanded under Fohmann in Liège and he began again with dissecting. In addition, Fohmann drafted a plan for an anatomical museum in Liège. However, its extensive collections were only brought to bear later, when the University of Liège made a hall available just for them.

Fohmann stayed in Liège until his death on September 25, 1837 at the age of 43 as a result of a severe spinal cord disease. One of the reasons for his death was the years of exposure to mercury associated with his work .

Exhibition of its anatomical collections

His anatomical collections of the lymphatic system are now preserved in museums in Heidelberg and Liège.
