Vincenzo Tusa

Vincenzo Tusa (born December 7, 1920 in Mistretta , † March 5, 2009 in Palermo ) was an Italian classical archaeologist . Tusa has made a name for itself in particular by researching ancient Selinunte and examining the temple of Segesta .

Life

Vincenzo Tusa attended school in Mistretta and studied at the University of Catania , where he obtained his degree in lettere in 1944 and then became an assistant at the chair of archeology of Guido Libertini . In 1947 he was given responsibility for excavations in Bologna and two years later for a similar task in Palermo. In 1963 he took over the office of soprintendente on the Soprintendenza for the cultural heritage of western Sicily ( Trapani province ). From 1964 to 1991 he was also Professor of Antichità puniche at the University of Palermo ; he was also the promoter of the journal Sicilia Archeologica . Within 20 years, i.e. until 1985, Tusa contributed significantly to the creation of an archaeological park with an area of ​​270 hectares in Selinunte. The archaeological zone Cave di Cusa was named after Vincenzo Tusa by the region of Sicily. Because of the importance of the archaeological sites for the communities on whose territory they are located, Tusa was made an honorary citizen by Castelvetrano and Campobello di Mazara .

Corresponding member of the Accademia dei Lincei since 1984 , he became socio nazionale in 1996 .

Vincenzo Tusa has a son, Sebastiano Tusa (1952-2019), who was the director of the Soprintendenza for marine archeology in the region of Sicily.
