Virgil Bercea (born December 9, 1957 in Habic , Mureș County ) is Bishop of Oradea .

Life

Virgil Bercea, the son of Simeon Bercea and his wife Licretia, attended the school in his hometown from 1964 to 1972, and from 1972 to 1976 the school in Reghin . He did his military service in Sighetu Marmației and then began studying agricultural sciences at the Agricultural and Veterinary University of Cluj-Napoca . During this time (1977–1981) he studied theology in secret and was ordained a priest on December 9, 1982 . As a priest he looked after the congregations from underground.

From 1990 to 1992 he studied Dogmatic Theology at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome and graduated with the subject "Particular Churches and the Universal Church Laity in the Context of the Encyclical of Christ Fideles". Back at home, he became Vicar General of the Archbishop of Făgăraș and Alba Iulia , Lucian Mureșan, and Professor of Dogmatics at the Theological Academy in Blaj in 1992 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him on July 20, 1994 auxiliary bishop in Făgăraş and Alba Iulia and at the same time titular bishop of Pupiana . The Archbishop of Făgăraş and Alba Iulia, Lucian Mureşan, consecrated him on September 8 of the same year as bishop ; Co- consecrators were Gheorghe Guțiu , Archbishop ad personam of Cluj-Gherla , and Ioan Ploscaru , Archbishop ad personam of Lugoj .

On November 6, 1996 he was appointed coadjutor bishop of Oradea (Greater Oradine). After Vasile Hossu's death , he succeeded him on June 8, 1997 as Bishop of Großwardein.

In 2003, Bishop Virgil Bercea received a doctorate in theology from the Pontifical University of Urbania in Rome.
