Vasile Hossu

Vasile Hossu (born May 17, 1919 in Carei ( German : Groß-Karol ), Satu Mare district , Romania ; † June 18, 1997 in Oradea ( German : Großwardein )) was Bishop of Oradea Mare (Großwardein) the Romanian Greek Catholic Church .

Life

Vasile Hossu, the son of post office clerk Gheorghe Hossu and his wife Iuliana, attended primary school in his hometown. In 1927 the family moved to Oradea because their father was transferred to another job. He attended high school and after graduating from high school in 1939 he began studying theology . On February 4, 1945, he received by Bishop Ioan Suciu the priesthood and decided to be celibate to live. After the banning of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church by the Communists , he was a substitute teacher in 1948 at a small village school. He took part in secret meetings of churchmen and was arrested for it in 1952. He was interrogated for six months in the State Security cellars in Oradea, charged and sentenced to ten years in prison for espionage and secret activities. Released early after two years, he worked as a teacher in Traniș , Sălaj County . In his small private house he held masses, baptisms and weddings in secret. In the presence of Bishop Iuliu Hirțea even priestly ordinations took place. After his retirement he went back to Oradea.

On March 3, 1990, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Oradea. The episcopal ordination donated him on May 27, 1990 Alexandru Todea , the Archbishop of Făgăraş and Alba Iulia , co- consecrators were Ioan Ploscaru , the Bishop of Lugoj, and Guido Del Mestri , the Apostolic Nuncio in Germany .

Bishop Vasile Hossu died on June 18, 1997 at the age of 78. His body was buried in the courtyard of the Franciscan Church. Representatives of the Orthodox Church did not agree to a burial in the crypt of St. Nicholas Cathedral. On the 10th anniversary of the death and the diocese jubilee (1777-2007) of the Romanian Greek Catholic diocese of Oradea (Großwardein) on May 13, 2007, the remains were transferred to the St. Nicholas Cathedral. With him, the remains of Bishop Iuliu Hirțea were transferred to St. Nicholas Cathedral.
