Virginiamycin is an antibiotically active chemical compound produced by other means from cultures of Streptomyces virginiae or the same. It belongs to the streptogramins .

The substance essentially consists of the two components virginiamycin M 1 (=  pristinamycin IIA ) and virginiamycin S 1 .

Virginiamycin is orally effective and is used in some countries in pigs and poultry to prevent infections and with the aim of good feed conversion. In the EU too, virginiamycin was used as a feed additive (E 711) to accelerate growth in animal fattening until it was banned at the end of the 1990s .
