Virserum is a place ( Tatort ) in the Swedish province of Kalmar län and the historical province of Småland . The place is in the municipality of Hultsfred .

geography

Virserum is located in southern Sweden in the Småland highlands in a forest and lake landscape on the shores of Lake Virserum ( Virserumssjön ). The Virserumsån flows through the village and flows into the Virserum lake. There are numerous nature reserves in and around Virserum. To the west of the village is the Länsmansängen nature reserve with many different populations of deciduous trees.

history

The place name Virserum is mentioned as Widisrum (forest clearing) for the first time in 1278. However, settlement in this area took place much earlier. Stone Age graves were found in the vicinity of the village .

1543 was the battle at Virserum between German mercenaries and Småland farmers. Nils Dacke was seriously injured.

For a long time the village was the natural market and trading center of the region. Between 1880 and 1980 Virserum was a center of the Swedish furniture industry with up to 40 furniture factories. Today only an extraordinary furniture industry museum reminds of this heyday. The museum is a faithful and functional replica of a furniture factory from 1920.

The last fighting of the Dacke uprising took place on the lakes outside the settlement . In 1956, a Nils Dacke statue by Arvid Källström was erected on the market square of Virserum to commemorate the resistance against Gustav Wasa. According to legend, Nils Dacke is said to have hidden in a cave near Virserum.

Culture

An architecturally unusual art museum has been located in Virserum since 1998: the art hall ( Virserums Konsthall ) is largely made of wood and has a transparent roof. There are changing exhibitions by Swedish artists that are meant to involve "the people". Self-knowledge and self-image are the main themes of the Kunsthalle. Established to provide space in the media for the stories and images of ordinary people.

There is also a permanent exhibition called "Beings of the Primeval Forest" and thematizes trolls , goblins and similar mythical creatures.

The DackeStop , named after Nils Dacke, is the town's cultural and tourist center. Here the old traditions and techniques are to be revived and preserved. The furniture industry museum, an old sawmill, an old forge, the art gallery, the herb garden, the telemuseum and the arts and crafts association Stinsen are located in this park area - a former industrial site that was redesigned in 1997 .

The Hembygdspark is another exhibition area. There are 15 buildings from the early 17th century to the 20th century, including the handmade paper mill Fröåsa and the Art Nouveau - Fotoateljé.
