Vitín Avilés

Vitín Avilés ( Víctor Manuel Avilés Rojas ; born September 30, 1930 in Mayagüez , † January 1, 2004 in New York City ) was a Puerto Rican singer .

Avilés began his musical career in 1943 with the Orqesta Hatuey . The following year he went to San Juan and joined the group of trumpeter Miguelito Miranda . In 1945 he emigrated to New York. There he worked with the orchestras of Enrique Madriguera , Tito Puente , Tito Rodríguez , Moncho Usera and Charlie Palmieri , Payo Alecia and the Sexteto La Playa with Xavier Cugat , the Lecuona Cuban Boys , Machito and his Afrocubans and the Cuarteto Marcanotogether, and recordings such as La televisión , La hija de Lola , Temes and Por qué ahora were made . His greatest success was the album Canta al amor (1974) produced by Joe Cain with Boleros by Tite Curet Alonso and Bobby Capó in the arrangement of Tito Puente and Charlie Palmieri.

In 1979 he recorded the album Vitín Avilés con la Súper Orquesta Venezuela with Nelson Pinedo and Nelson Alizo in Caracas . Due to chronic diabetes, he was mainly active as a studio musician in the 1980s and participated as a chorus singer on the recordings of other musicians. By 2000 he had made more than 50 records. That year he was inducted into the International Latin Music Hall of Fame .
