Vito Castorina

Vito Castorina (born July 7, 1910 in Giarre , † September 9, 1965 in Rome ) was an Italian composer , conductor and music teacher .

Castorina studied from 1920 at the Naples Conservatory and graduated in 1928 with a diploma in orchestral conducting. He then worked as a composer for the Revue Theater and composed for Totò , Erminio Macario and Nino Taranto , among others . He was awarded the Maschera d'Argento for the music for a Macario show . In addition, Castorina also composed film scores.

In 1952 he went to Mexico with an Italian drama group, then worked in Argentina and finally in the Dominican Republic, where he directed the orchestra of the La Voz Dominicana radio station for thirteen years . At the suggestion of Petán Trujillo , the director of La Voz Dominicana, he also founded a string orchestra, which was also under his direction.

Castorina also taught at the Santo Domingo Conservatory; among other things, Rafael Solano was his student. As an orchestral director he worked with Rafael Sánchez Cestero , Henry Ely , Arístides Incháustegui and Ivonne Haza , among others , and made Italian opera known in the Dominican Republic with works such as Cavalleria rusticana and La traviata . In 1965 he returned to Italy and died in Rome in September of the same year.
