Vitorino Magalhães Godinho

Vitorino Magalhães Godinho (born June 9, 1918 in Lisbon ; † April 26, 2011 ibid) was a Portuguese historian .

Life

Magalhães Godinho studied after school and earned a doctorate in literature from the Sorbonne . In 1973 he was instrumental in founding the New University of Lisbon , where he was professor of history . He was one of the most important historians of Portugal, who was particularly influenced by his study visit to France and who researched the history of Portugal in the 15th and 16th centuries using sociological approaches.

In 1969 his main work L'Économie de l'empire portugais aux XVe et XVIe siècles appeared . In 1974 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the British Academy . In 1976 he became a corresponding member of the Academia Brasileira de Letras and also received for his book Emergence of Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries, the Balzan Prize 1991 in the category History.
