criticism

According to a study by Stiftung Warentest , which was published by the FAZ in 2012 , there was an increased exposure to pathogens (germs) (at least at the time of the test ). Among other things, the filling in plastic bottles resulted in a devaluation to the rating 4 of the own rating system of the Stiftung Warentest. In the overall assessment, Vittel just achieved a satisfactory (grade 3) test result.

In 2019, Nestlé received the negative Golden Vulture award, which was awarded for the first time by the organization Deutsche Umwelthilfe, for the most senseless plastic disposable packaging of the year for the product Vittel. The winner was chosen from a total of more than 20,000 votes cast online.

Current development

Since 2006, various marketing strategies (including new forms of packaging, dynamic colors and modern labels) have attempted to increase market share.

As a result, the groundwater level has fallen by 30 centimeters per year since 1990 - by 10 meters in 40 years. Nestlé Waters has been accused by local residents and environmentalists of "overexploiting" the spring water that supplies the city and its bottling plant to keep exports going. Nestlé is allowed to use one million cubic meters per year for its mineral water. The Fromagerie de l'Ermitage dairy takes another 600,000 cubic meters of spring water . Both companies use nearly half of the water in Vittel, while the rest remains with the approximately 5,000 residents and the surrounding areas. Nestlé says it has reduced water consumption by 20 percent over the past 10 years since 2008. Christophe Klotz, head of Nestlé subsidiary Agrivair, said they "offered to voluntarily reduce the allocated quota by 25 percent." However, that "is not enough to compensate for the deficiency."

It is currently being examined whether the residents of Vittel should be supplied with drinking water from outside via a pipeline. The public prosecutor's office is now investigating a local politician for lobbying . In autumn 2019 it became known that charges would soon be brought. In March 2019, the airline Eurowings announced that it would no longer carry Vittel in its range and instead replace it with a product from another company that sells 100% of the water in bottles made from recycled plastic . In October 2019 it became known that the authorities of the Vosges department had withdrawn their support for the pipeline project. Since the beginning of September 2019, the Vittel water for Switzerland has been bottled from another source in the village.
