Vittorio Matteo Corcos (born October 4, 1859 in Livorno , † November 8, 1933 in Florence ) was an Italian portrait painter .

Life

Corcos attended the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Florence and was trained by Enrico Pollastrini . Between 1878 and 1879 he studied in Naples with Domenico Morelli , who influenced his painting style. In 1880 he moved to Paris , where he signed a fifteen-year cooperation agreement with the art dealer Goupil & Cie. There he met Vincent van Gogh , who worked for Goupil. Corcos visited the studio of the history and portrait painter Léon Bonnat , who was known for his portraits of women from Parisian society and whose painting style inspired him. The French impressionist artists had an influence on his painting, but so did Giovanni Boldini and Giuseppe de Nittis , who were of Italian descent.

In the years 1881, 1882 and 1885 Corcos was so well known that his paintings were exhibited in the Paris Salon . In 1886 Corcos returned to Italy and in the same year took part in an exhibition in Livorno, where painters from the Macchiaioli group and other regional art schools took part. In 1887 he converted to Catholicism - Corcos was of Jewish descent - and married Emma Ciabatti , widowed Rotigliano, in Florence , who introduced him to prestigious literary circles, where he met Carducci and Gabriele D'Annunzio, for example .

Corco's portraiture earned him an excellent reputation , for example in Germany in 1904 he painted portraits of Kaiser Wilhelm II and his wife , of other high-ranking German personalities as well as portraits of Amélie von Orléans , Queen of Portugal and Margaritha von Savoyen , Queen of Italy.

In 1913, his self-portrait was accepted into the Uffizi in Florence.
