Vitus Wurmdobler (born February 1, 1945 in Regenstauf ) is a German restorer . Wurmdobler lives and works in Erbes-Büdesheim in Rhineland-Hesse and has helped shape the preservation, restoration and redesign of important monuments not only in the region and Rhineland-Palatinate , but also nationwide with his workshop over the past decades .

Life

Wurmdobler grew up as the fourth child of the painter Fritz Wurmdobler in the Upper Palatinate, where he trained as a church painter , gilder and barrel painter after high school . He then worked in various workshops, including in Freiburg im Breisgau and at the Middle Rhine State Museum in Mainz . Wurmdobler headed the restoration workshop in the Mainz Cathedral Museum until 1976. Together with his wife, the painter Damaris Wurmsdobler , the restorer in 1977 made its own operation independently and has since restorations and designs in some 140 churches performed. Among other things, he worked in large houses such as the Katharinenkirche in Oppenheim , the St. Martin Basilica in Bingen and the Mainz Cathedral . Wurmdobler was also active in many smaller buildings, for example in the Trinity Church in Frankenthal and the crypt of St. Matthias in Trier. In Wiesbaden , Wurmdobler, who was named “ Restorer of the Year ” in 1992 , rediscovered the Art Nouveau design of the Luther Church and made it aware of it.

Looking after the frescoes by Johann von Schraudolph (so-called "Schraudolph frescos") from the Speyer Cathedral over three decades is probably one of the restorer's most important tasks. After securing and restoring the choir of the Herz-Jesu Church in Mainz-Mombach in 2001, its choir was painted in color in coordination with the diocesan conservator Hans-Jürgen Kotzur . In 2012, the huge wall paintings in the Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck, restored under his direction, were made accessible to the public for the first time in 50 years. The exhibition entitled “The Conquest of the Wall Nazarene Frescoes in the View of the Present” was shown until September 9, 2012.
