Vogelstein (Czech Ptačí kámen or Ptačinec ) is the German name of a rock formation of granite in the western part of the Silesian ridge of the Giant Mountains in the Czech Republic .

location

The several meter high granite rocks are located on the southern slope of the Hraniční hřeben (German border ridge ) above the Bear Ground ( Medvědí důl ), at an altitude of 1310 meters in the area of the Krkonošský národní park (KRNAP). Almost 5 km north of Spindleruv Mlyn (Czech Špindlerův Mlýn , Polish Szpindlerowy Młyn ) there is a good view of the western Giant Mountains and the Elbe Basin ( Labský důl ).

Emergence

The bizarre rock formation is a characteristic example of the weathering of wool sacks that can often be found in the Giant Mountains . It was created through weathering processes that lasted thousands of years , with great mechanical forces especially during the last ice age giving rise to the present shape. Water penetrated into gaps and cracks, froze and burst in stretching the rock and created so ever deeper chasms . The ice thawed and froze again. In connection with the so-called solifluction (soil flow), which carried out the removal of loose material downhill, this ultimately led to the rocks remaining individually. Geomorphologically, the rock formation is assigned to the Tor type (it is named after the rock towers in Dartmoor / England called Tors (Czech Tory ) ).

Surroundings

There are similar rock groups in the vicinity: the Mädelsteine and Mannsteine , which form the double summit of the border ridge, and the Festungshübel (Czech Pevnost ) at 1012 meters above sea level. Due to nature conservation regulations, the Vogelstein can only be reached on foot, but all year round. In winter with the ski lift at the Davidsbauden ( Davidovy Boudy ), in the rest of the season blue-marked hiking trails lead over the Bradlerbauden ( Brádlerovy boudy ), which are located southwest on the southeast slope of the Great Balaclava or, over the Spindlerpass , past the ruins of the year Peterbaude ( Petrovy boudy ) burned down in 2011 , up the southeast slope.
