The Swiss Ornithological Institute in Sempach is a non-profit foundation for ornithology and bird protection with headquarters in Sempach in the canton of Lucerne .
The ornithological station was founded in 1924 as a ringing center for researching bird migration in the Alpine region . Since then it has developed from a voluntary one-man business into an independent institute with over 130 employees, recognized at home and abroad. In 1954, the Swiss Ornithological Institute in Sempach was transferred to an independent foundation under Swiss law. In 1955 the ornithological station moved from the town hall of Sempach to a new building on Lake Sempach .
