The Swiss Ornithological Institute in Sempach is a non-profit foundation for ornithology and bird protection with headquarters in Sempach in the canton of Lucerne .

The ornithological station was founded in 1924 as a ringing center for researching bird migration in the Alpine region . Since then it has developed from a voluntary one-man business into an independent institute with over 130 employees, recognized at home and abroad. In 1954, the Swiss Ornithological Institute in Sempach was transferred to an independent foundation under Swiss law. In 1955 the ornithological station moved from the town hall of Sempach to a new building on Lake Sempach . Since 1958 she has operated, among other things, a ringing station at 1923  m above sea level. M. high Col de Bretolet .

The Swiss Ornithological Institute in Sempach monitors the local bird life , researches the way of life of wild birds and investigates the causes of the threat to the bird world.
