The Vosges-rose ( Rosa dumalis ), and Blue Green Rose or Gray Green Rose called, is a plant of the genus roses ( Rosa ) within the family of the rose family (Rosaceae). It is widespread in Europe.

Appearance and leaf

The Vosges rose grows as a compact shrub and reaches heights of up to 2 meters. The bark of the branches is often reddish, bluish with frost. The spines are hooked and curved and have a broad base.

The alternate leaves are pinnate unpaired with five or seven closely spaced leaflets. The leaflets are 2 to 4 centimeters wide and ovate to rounded with a pointed or blunt upper end and a sharp, double-serrated edge. The leaflets are shiny blue-green, bluish frosted and glabrous on both sides.

Flower and fruit

The flowering period extends from June to July. The flowers stand alone or in groups. The relatively large bracts cover the up to 1 centimeter long, bare, unreinforced flower stalks. The fragrant, hermaphrodite flowers are four to five centimeters in diameter and have radial symmetry and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five relatively large, foliage-like, pinnate sepals are gray haired and spread out to erect after the anthesis , usually forming a long tuft on the rose hip and more or less remaining. The five petals are pink. There are many stamens present. The styles are short and densely hairy. The stylus channel is 1.1 to 2.5 millimeters wide. The scar head, with more or less woolly hair, is broad and hat-like.

The fruit stalk is much shorter than the rose hip. The rose hips, which are deep red when ripe, are up to 2 centimeters in length, spherical to ovoid and smooth or glandular.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 35.

Rosa dumalis was seldom assigned to Rosa canina by authors . Some subspecies have been described, none of which is currently accepted. Rosa dumalis belongs to the section Caninae from the subgenus Rosa in the genus Rosa .

Occurrence

Rosa dumalis occurs in front of montane to high montane or subalpine bushes, at the edges of paths and forests, on piles of stone piles, in hedges and in light rock rubble forests. It is a character species of the Corylo-Rosetum vosagiacae from the Berberidion association.

The wild rose Rosa dumalis was used in Pillnitz to breed a particularly vitamin-rich rose hip rose , the 'PiRo 3' variety.

Rosa dumalis is hardy to −35 ° C ( USDA zone 4 ).
