action

Three policemen from the WEGA special unit , Christian, Nikolai and the young “Burschi”, have been given the task of transferring the detainee Kofi to his African homeland, and they drive him to Vienna Airport . Here on the gangway, however, Kofi suffers a nervous breakdown and desperately defends himself with hands and feet to board the plane. Because the pilot also refuses to take the African away, the police have to take Kofi back with them. On the way back to the police, the officers become violent and abuse Kofi with racist slogans, among other things.

Finally they come up with a perfidious plan. You drive him to a warehouse. Here Nikolai pulls Kofi out of the police car, tied with a cable tie, although he is now the leader of the group below Christian. This is followed by verbal abuse, then blows and kicks against the body and finally against the head. Burschi, who is initially stunned by the hustle and bustle, does not want to be seen as a failure and “wimp” and can finally be persuaded to hit Kofi with brutality as well. But Nikolai still hasn't had enough. He pulls a transparent plastic bag out of his pocket, pulls this kofi over his head and pulls it shut for so long that the African almost suffocates. Bleeding, lying in his own vomit, Kofi is also beaten to the ground by the officers' batons. But now the Vega officials are facing a new problem: how to get rid of the witness? Nikolai finally forces Burschi to get into the police car, put it in reverse and run over Kofi, which he does. The act is supposed to be disguised as Kofi's attempt to escape.

Then they drag Kofi's lifeless body into the car and drive back to the police station. But in the car, Kofi comes to. Burschi, who is at the wheel, has had enough now. He's heading to the hospital. Here Kofi is handed over to the doctors.

Shortly afterwards, Burschi knocks Nikolai down. This reminds Burschi that he too is nothing better and that evil lurks in him too.

background

The plot is based on the Bakary J. case , which actually took place in April 2006 in Vienna. At that time, the Gambier Bakary Jassey was brutally mistreated by four Wega officers. Some of the police officers involved were sentenced to conditional prison terms and a small fine, and were subsequently dismissed from the police force.

For the film, the names of the Wega officials were changed for personal reasons. The victim's name is not explicitly mentioned in the film, but he is mentioned in press releases as well as in the credits of the film Kofi.

The film was shot in Vienna and Budapest , the budget was 40,000 euros.

In 2013 the film was included in the police training curriculum . This was rejected by the FPÖ- affiliated union faction AUF . In autumn 2018 it became known that the Ministry of the Interior of the Federal Government Kurz, under the direction of Herbert Kickl (FPÖ), ended the film screenings.

To the title

Void is the English word for emptiness or nothing and should mean the law-free space in which the Vega officials thought they were.
