Volker Heuken

Volker Heuken (* 1990 in Leverkusen ) is a German jazz musician ( vibraphone , composition ).

Live and act

Heuken started playing drums as a child ; At the age of 17 he discovered jazz and the vibraphone for himself. He received lessons from David Friedman , Matthias Goebel and Mathias Haus . From 2011 he studied jazz mallets with Roland Neffe and composition with Steffen Schorn at the Nuremberg University of Music ; he was also part of the Bavarian Youth Jazz Orchestra. After completing his bachelor's degree, he completed a master's degree with Michael Wollny at the University of Music and Theater "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" in Leipzig by 2019 .

Heuken presented itself at the Jazzfest Bonn , the Leverkusener Jazztage and Jazztage Mainz and in 2016 presented the concept album Portugal with his sextet on Label 11 , which contains his own compositions in the form of a suite. In the meantime he composes “music based on symphonic criteria that develops great charisma”.

Heuken is the winner of the Bruno Rother Memorial Competition 2014; In addition, in 2019 he received the Leipzig jazz talent award with the trio Heuken / Stadtfeld / Heigenhuber. Together with Izabella Effenberg , he was the artistic director of the vibraphone festival Vibraphonissimo held in Middle Franconia . He can also be heard on Rebecca Trescher 's albums.
