The public bath of the city of Nuremberg in Nuremberg , Rothenburger Strasse 10 , was built between 1911 and 1913. The Nuremberg Volksbad is considered a jewel of Art Nouveau bathing culture. The building design cites Roman thermal baths , such as the portico columns at the entrance with the city's coat of arms .

History and use

The designs were drawn up by the architect Carl Weber and the engineer Friedrich Küfner . The construction costs amounted to approximately 1.8 million marks . The Volksbad was officially opened on January 2, 1914. The Art Nouveau building was equipped with three indoor swimming pools (two for men, one for women), 66 baths, 14 showers, a steam bath as well as hairdressing and refreshment rooms. A dog bath and laundry were also integrated. It was closed for three months during the First World War . From 1921 the women's swimming pool was available for swimming lessons at elementary schools all year round. As early as July 27, 1933, the city council decided that Jews would be prohibited from using the city's bathing establishments; Jews were initially only tolerated in the shower rooms and bathtubs. During the Second World War , 70 percent of the pool was destroyed and the reconstruction in stages was not completed until 1959. Since the closure in 1994, no use has been found to this day.

In 1995 the Volksbad u. a. used for techno parties. Today the bathroom can be rented for filming and photography workshops. The office of the Gostenhofer Grünen and a Thai restaurant are located in the left wing .

In the meantime, the use as an Arab museum was also discussed. A final decision about the further use of the public bath is still pending.

The water-spouting equestrian sculpture on Lake Wöhrder is a second cast of a figure from the Neptune Fountain , stood in the women's hall of the Volksbad from 1914 and was moved to the Adenauerbrücke in 1967.

Redevelopment

A feasibility study in 2016 showed that "a new use as a swimming pool with sauna would be possible if the federal government and the state support the project." During a joint press conference on September 20, 2018, the Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder and the Lord Mayor of Nuremberg Ulrich Maly announced that the Free State of Bavaria would contribute 18 million euros to a redevelopment.

In July 2019, the city of Nuremberg announced that the Europe-wide tender for a suitable planning team had already started, so that the preliminary planning could be completed in spring 2020 and construction could start in mid-2021. The renovation of the Volksbad is not just an individual project, but rather the central measure in the renewal of the surrounding city district. The dialogue with clubs and associations, as well as other measures for the participation of the citizens, are therefore explicitly intended for the planning process.
