The Wöhrder See (not to be confused with the Wörthersee ) is a reservoir in the city of Nuremberg . It is around 2600 m long, an average of 100–200 m wide and covers an area of 52  hectares . It is named after the Nuremberg district of Wöhrd .

Emergence

In 1959, the Nuremberg city council decided to create Lake Wöhrder. It was completed in 1981. Before that, the Pegnitz flowed in two arms through a flood plain that was often flooded.

In addition to exposing the old town of Nuremberg from flooding , the Wöhrder Lake was a much-used recreational area and the bomb crater landscape in the Pegnitzwiesen that was left behind by World War II was removed.

location

The Wöhrder See in the east of Nuremberg extends from the district of Wöhrd to Mögeldorf and Erlenstegen . It consists of two interconnected parts, the Lower Wöhrder See with a length of about 1200 and a maximum width of 450 meters, and the Upper Wöhrder See with a length of about 1400 meters.

At the lower end of the lake, where the Pegnitz flows out again, joins the Wöhrder Wiese , an inner-city green area that extends to the Altstadtring. There are numerous buildings from various faculties of the Nuremberg University of Applied Sciences .

At the upper end of the lake at the tributary of the Pegnitz, the extensive Pegnitz floodplains connect with the Langsee , a popular bathing lake.

The Wöhrder See is easily accessible by public transport. The line 5 tram Nuremberg (direction Zoo ) stops right at the large parking lot in front of the condominium Norikus the Lower Wöhrder Lake (stop Tullnaupark).

use

At the western end below the dam of the Wöhrder See a power plant was built that uses the hydropower to generate electricity. The achievable output varies there between 150 and 400 kilowatts. It is one of the five small hydropower plants that are operated in the city of Nuremberg and that together generate a total output of around 0.92 megawatts.

The entire area around Lake Wöhrder is designated as a landscape protection area (LSG-00536.06). While the Untere Wöhrder See is released for use by pedal boats (boat rental), the Obere Wöhrder See is a nature reserve for animals.

The lake is accessed on both sides by riverside paths, some of which are asphalted. The main path along the north bank is the Johann-Soergel-Weg, along the south bank the Wöhrder Wiesenweg runs. The paths are frequented by walkers, cyclists , inline skaters , joggers , walkers and numerous Nordic walkers at all times of the day.

Especially on the south shore of the Lower Lake Wöhrder is like fishing .

Two road bridges, a railway and a pedestrian bridge span the lake. The Middle Ring (Ostring) runs over the Dr. Gustav Heinemann Bridge as a connection between the Nuremberg districts of Schoppershof and Zerzabelshof . The Ludwig Erhard Bridge crosses the eastern part of the Upper Wöhrder See and connects the districts of Mögeldorf and Erlenstegen. The bridge of the Nuremberg – Cheb railway line and the pedestrian bridge, which can also be used by cyclists, run right next to each other and span the area at the transition from the Upper to the Lower Wöhrder See.

Events

The Wöhrder Kärwa and the Wöhrder Seefest take place every year on the north-western shore of the lake .

Since 1996, the route of the Nuremberg City Run has been running around Lake Wöhrder, the largest running event in Northern Bavaria with several thousand participants, which is held every year at the beginning of October.

Flora and fauna

Marsh irises on the lake shore

The Wöhrder lake is a habitat for numerous waterfowl such as swans , coots , gray , Canadian and bumps goose , Stock- and tufted ducks . The red-crested pochard and the scoter can also be found in larger associations. In the last few years some couples of great crested grebes have also settled. In the spring of 2007 a black mourning swan was a guest for some time . In the eastern shore trees have cormorants , directly opposite on the west bank Gray Heron established breeding colonies.

The insect world of the lake provides abundant food for shore , flour and barn swallows and swifts , which depends on the weather, especially in the early morning and in the evening insulation show their maneuvers.

The trees in the lakeshore area are mainly black alder , norwegian , field and sycamore maples , poplars , willows , bird cherries , maple- leaved plane trees , robinia and hornbeams . In the area of the north-west bank there is a tulip tree and a large collection of Caucasian wing nuts, as well as several new blister ash trees that have been planted since 2010 . When shrubs are elderberry , hawthorn and dogwood common, there are also euonymus and Cornelian cherries .

Problems

Algae

In every summer, especially after a long heat, the algae multiply and form green algae carpets with an unpleasant smell. A mowing boat is used as a countermeasure. With the reconstruction of the reservoir as part of the water world , the problem should be reduced.

Bird flu cases in 2007

From June 18, 2007, a number of dead water birds were found at Lake Wöhrder. Investigations at the State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL) in Erlangen and the Friedrich Loeffler Institute detected the highly pathogenic H5N1 influenza A virus , the causative agent of the H5N1 bird flu , in seven mute swans found dead and one gray goose . From June 23, 2007, a restricted area was temporarily set up in which, among other things, dogs and cats were not allowed to roam freely. No other cases have occurred since then.

On February 24, 2011, the then Bavarian Environment Minister Markus Söder gave the “go-ahead” for the Wöhrder See water world project . The project, which has been implemented in several construction phases since 2012, aims to divide the lake into two zones. The lower Wöhrder See into a recreation and leisure area, the upper part should essentially be left to nature. For the estimated 10 million euros, Söder wants to come largely from his budget. In order to involve citizens in the planning, a website was set up on which suggestions, suggestions and ideas could be submitted.

Sandy beach on the north shore of Lake Wöhrder (2013)

In 2012 a 200 m long boulevard walkway was built at Sebastianspital. In 2013, an initially 130 m long sandy beach was created on the western north shore of the lower Wöhrder See. On the south bank adjacent to the Norikus residential complex, Norikus Bay was developed and flooded with a 400 m long dam as a bathing zone with island-like plant filters by 2016.

Norikus residential complex

On the south bank of the Unteren Wöhrder See the "Norikus" (or "Noricus"), the largest residential complex in Bavaria at the time , was built on the Zeltnerhügel parallel to the construction of the reservoir from 1968 to 1972 under the developer of DEBA Munich . The complex, which is up to 80 meters high, was to set a structural accent in the east of Nuremberg. Based on the ideas of Le Corbusier , it was purchased based on a design by the Nuremberg architect Harald Loebermann , who also designed the Nuremberg Meistersinger Hall. The residential complex includes three high-rise buildings with 16, 17 and 22 floors. The facility, inaugurated by the Federal Minister at the time, Käte Strobel , comprises around 850 apartments on around 32,000 m² of living space, an indoor swimming pool , a row of shops, a block heating unit and a cogeneration unit, as well as the largest private underground car park in southern Germany with over 600 parking spaces. From 2004 to 2006 the Norikus was renovated and the striking black and white paintwork renewed. Currently around 2500 people live in the Norikus.

Bavaria 07 open-air swimming pool at the "Pulversee"

The "Bayern 07" swimmers' association, one of Nuremberg's oldest swimming clubs, operates an outdoor pool with a swimmer, a non-swimmer and a paddling pool , beach volleyball courts and table tennis tables right next to the southern shore of the Untere Wöhrder See .

The powder lake, which disappeared with the construction of the Wöhrder lake, was a small reservoir in a southern arm of the Wöhrder Pegnitzaue. The name came from a former powder mill in the Tullnau district .
