The Volkshochschule Straubing is a public institution for adult and further education sponsored by the city of Straubing . The adult education center in Straubing cooperates with adult education centers in the Lower Bavarian region and beyond.

history

Municipal community college

On January 19, 1947, the Straubing municipal public education center was re-established as a municipal institution. In 1978 the municipal adult education center in Straubing emerged as a municipal institution. At that time she only used classrooms in schools. In 1986 new rooms were added to the vocational school on Stadtgraben and in 1996 the first own rooms and offices in the former Franciscan monastery could be moved into. The first vhs training center was set up here and was used until mid-2013.

In 2002 the municipal adult education center was founded as the Volkshochschule Straubing non-profit GmbH (gGmbH) . Its purpose is to promote the education of adults and adolescents, the city of Straubing is the sole shareholder. As one of the few of the 190 Bavarian adult education centers (as of 2013), the vhs Straubing operates as a company in the legal form of a non-profit GmbH (gGmbH).

In 2008, the annual number of listeners reached its highest level of around 14,000, dropped to just under 10,000 and developed with a slightly downward trend - since 2014 there has been a slight increase in the number of participants.

The new vhs building was inaugurated in 2014. The adult education center continued to develop in the former factory building. With the vhs house, a barrier-free adult education center was created. The facilities include seminar rooms, IT training rooms, gymnastics rooms, relaxation rooms, work rooms, a teaching kitchen, the offices of the office and the café-meeting point. She also uses gyms and other rooms in many Straubing schools and with other cooperation partners.

As part of the statutory mandate of the vhs Straubing, courses in the areas of society / life , vocational training , IT / multimedia / basic education , languages , health and culture / design are offered in two semesters per year, as well as other events such as lectures and arranging educational trips / Rides . This also includes target group-oriented events for the active 50+ generation , only for women , for parents and children and also for children and young people (“young vhs”). The offers also reach the surrounding area, in particular the Straubing-Bogen district , which has an independent adult education center based in Oberalteich and a few branch offices.

Exam Center

As part of a course, the medical examination for the certificate nutritionist (vhs - medically examined) can be taken. Language certificates , the Xpert Business (XB) can be acquired at the vhs and the vhs is an examination center for the ECDL (European Computer Driving License ).

Herzogstadtlauf

In 2009 she initiated the first half marathon in Straubing, over 850 runners took part in this fun run. Since 2011, the other Herzogstadtlaufen have taken place under the direct direction of the city of Straubing, the vhs is indirectly involved through preparatory courses and as a co-host until 2013.

Children and young people

Together with the Straubing Community Foundation, she initiated the Straubing Children's University in 2012 . Modernized offer

Courses from the so-called extended learning worlds, which are currently only offered in the region by the Straubing Adult Education Center, have a significantly greater range . The vhs is also working on expanded learning worlds - the vhs are involved in the digital society . The basic idea of ​​"extended learning worlds" is based on the idea that learning with the support of the Internet opens up the closed everyday learning of the classic teaching culture and expands it in terms of content, social and spatial dimensions for the benefit of the learners. Extended learning worlds are to be understood as a basic concept that corresponds to the practice of interwoven, analog-digital reality. This concept receives national attention at the 10th symposium ("Perspective Didactics - Education in Extended Learning Worlds") organized by W. Bertelsmann Verlag in October 2014.

Classic face-to-face learning is being expanded more and more to include online elements.

  • In 2008 and 2009, the first steps were taken with blended learning courses on the vhs-Freelearning.de platform .
  • In 2014, the vhs Straubing was one of the six German adult education centers that offered the first vhs- Massive Open Online Course (vhsStrickMooc) for participants and carried it out with additional face-to-face appointments, which reached the entire German-speaking area with over 600 registered participants - the vhs produced three of the 12 tutorials for this , and the "teaser tutorial", all of which can also be found on YouTube . The moderation of all ten tutorial publications was broadcast “live from the virtual classroom” from Straubing via Adobe Connect.

Cooperation with other adult education centers

The Volkshochschule Straubing is a member of the German Adult Education Association , the umbrella organization of the 16 regional VHS associations. In order to be able to offer courses that meet the special challenges in rural areas, the vhs also offers courses in cooperation with the Deggendorf and Landau adult education centers . Courses on certain certificate systems for financial accounting and business administration were offered, coordinated with other adult education centers in Lower Bavaria. This made it possible for those interested to attend advanced modules. A cooperation with Lower Bavarian and Upper Palatinate adult education centers enabled cultural education with the offer vhs Kultur in 2014 and 2015.
