The Volkspark Malchower See is a park in the Berlin district of Malchow in the Lichtenberg district . It is west of Dorfstrasse and southwest of Hohenschönhauser Weg.

development

Prehistory of the green spaces

This area with the property was first mentioned in a document in the middle of the 18th century, when the owner, Minister Baron Paul von Fuchs, had a large garden with fruit trees and herbs laid out. As a result, the owners changed several times, and finally the city of Berlin took over the entire complex with manor houses and gardens in 1882. Nearby were Rieselfelder created. The manor garden became part of a city nursery , some of which has survived into the 21st century. The manor buildings were used by the Humboldt University in the 1950s ; after 1990 they stood empty for a few years.

The Volkspark

The Malchower See , east of the former estate, was hardly cultivated, but it is also part of the Volkspark. Already at the beginning of the 1980s, in connection with the construction of the residential buildings in Neu-Hohenschönhausen and Wartenberg, the East Berlin magistrate had planned together with the district office to convert the large area including the lake into a public park. By then, the area had become a wild garbage dump . Construction was scheduled to start in 1990, but due to the political changes it did not happen.

Children's playground in the Volkspark Malchower See

Only after the political change were the plans for the redesign into a public park resumed and brought to new standards. In 1991 the Green Spaces Office had topsoil delivered and the landfill covered with it. Years later, paths were laid out, and other trees and shrubs were planted in addition to the existing trees. Sunbathing areas and a children's playground were created.

description

The Volkspark is also part of the Malchower Aue nature reserve , which was designated in 1995 and covers an area of 22.2 hectares. Since 1998 the area are east of the lake, and the resulting years alder - carr and Torfstichteiche the Malchower Aue and the only allotment area of the district with about 1.2 ha also to the people park. The plans also included the construction of a sports stadium, the filling of a small winter sports facility, the establishment of a lido and the construction of an observation tower. However, the district keeps a small herd of Scottish Highland cattle in a former camp near the lake . There are no identifiable activities for further expansion until 2018.

Surroundings

In the wider area, the Neu-Hohenschönhausen development area was built in the 1980s .

Immediately on the main path through the park, there has been a kind of fitness trail with several exercise stations since the beginning of the 21st century . And there is a memorial stone for the stunt pilot Günter Fries , who crashed and died here in 1934 during a training flight.

Noteworthy are a daycare center and a school at the beginning of the park, the names of which refer to the corresponding status: Green Campus Malchow . This facility works closely with the Malchow Nature Conservation Station .

The manor buildings do not belong to the Volkspark, large parts meanwhile (status: end of 2018) form the headquarters of the Synanon Foundation .
