Patrick Vollat (* 1949 in Lyon ) is a French mathematician and jazz pianist .

Life

Vollat learned the piano as a child and then studied mathematics. He has been teaching mathematics at the École nationale des travaux publics de l'État (ENTPE) since 1976 . Among other things, he deals with Turing machines and applications of the Maple system.

Since the mid-1970s he has also appeared regularly as a pianist in various groups of the Lyoner Association à la Recherche d'un Folklore Imaginaire and has also contributed compositionally to developing the jazz direction of imaginary folklore . He played and recorded with the Workshop de Lyon (1975), with the first quintet by Louis Sclavis , with the Marmite Infernal (1979–1990), but also with a duo with saxophonist Alain Rellay, which has existed since 1980 (this temporarily with drummer Christian Rollet became the Trio Vollat Trois ), with Colette Magny and in a duo with bassist Jean Bolcato . He also appears as a soloist. After a solo appearance at the Total Music Meeting in 1984, the Jazz Podium read : “Vollat used both the keys and the strings. It is astonishing that he conjured up the craziest and craziest sound accumulations not by tearing the strings or their preparation, but by ingenious chord combinations. His chord clusters alternate with excessive cluster play , which Vollat never gets out of control and whose structure he disclosed. "
