The Voralpenkreuz junction is a motorway junction that connects the Austrian motorways West Autobahn  (A1) , Innkreis Autobahn  (A8) and Pyhrn Autobahn  (A9) . It is located in the Upper Austrian district of Wels-Land in the municipality of Sattledt .

function

The junction crosses the north-east-south-west A1 Vienna - Salzburg with the north-south A8 / A9. The northbound route is the Welser Westspange , which is included in the Innkreis Autobahn (A8), which leads to Passau ( German border). The route A9 leading south is the motorway to Graz and on to Spielfeld ( Slovenian border). This makes the pre-alpine cross the central node of the most important Austrian west-east transit route with the south-eastern Alpine transversal . Since the traffic flows from Western Europe to Southeastern Europe with the eastward expansion of the EU from the route via Slovenia to the better developed and incline-free route via Budapest , the cross has lost its importance, the route A8 – A25 – A1 (northern bypass from Wels via the Wels motorway A25 junction Wels of the A8 - junction Haid of the A1) has had a higher traffic volume than the pre-alpine cross as a whole for several years.

In addition, is Autobahnraststätte Landzeit Voralpenkreuz connected via the A8 at both highway routes.

Building history

Construction of the Voralpenkreuz motorway junction began in 1938 under the name Sattledt junction . The earthworks were almost completed by 1942 and the two abutments and the central pillar of the bridge structure were built. The structure of the bridge was not built until 1957/58, but in the full width of 40 m. In 1989, the cross was expanded with the construction of the A9, whereby the original RAB planning was retained for cost reasons .

From 2001 to 2003 the cross was rebuilt, and the supporting structure of the main bridge structure was also renewed. The RAB abutments and the central pillar were retained.

In 2013 it was rebuilt again. The secondary lines running through the A1, which used to be largely inoperable as an interlinked route , were extended from the intersection in the direction of Vienna, and the Sattledt exit was integrated 1½ kilometers further, allowing you to come from the A8 / A9 and exit at Sattledt (or vice versa) The actual A1 is no longer used, and the vehicles leaving the A1 in the direction of Vienna at Sattledt exit before the intersection (or enter Salzburg afterwards). As a result, the regional traffic of the bypass function for Wels and the passing long-distance traffic of the A1 could be better unbundled.

designation

After the completion of the cross, efforts were made to change the name of the cross to the Sattledt node , especially since the name Voralpenkreuz does not correspond to the official language in Austria. The pre- alpine cross is officially referred to as the pre-alpine cross node . However, the ASFINAG motorway operator refused to change its name. The rest stop at the junction is also marketed as the Voralpenkreuz rest stop .

Individual evidence

  1. A1 km 207 (Vorchdorf west of the cross) 36,000 vehicles / 24h; A8 km 10 (west of Wels) 14,000 vehicles / 24h; A9 km 1 (south of the cross): 18,000 vehicles / 24h - together roughly 50,000 vehicles / 24h; A23 km 14 (north of Wels) 40,000 vehicles / 24h (all 2006, values rounded), according to DORIS → road traffic census ; the traffic volume on the A23 has grown significantly since then.
