Pre-study course

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pre-study courses are preparatory institutions in Austria. They offer applicants with insufficient knowledge of the German language and with a foreign university entrance qualification that is not recognized as equivalent to an Austrian secondary school leaving certificate (also called Matura ) courses to prepare for the supplementary examinations prescribed for them, and they hold these exams. There are preparatory courses in Vienna , Graz and Leoben .

Development and organization

The history of the preparatory courses is closely linked to development aid and development policy. The first preparatory course was established in Leoben in 1961, followed by Vienna in 1962 (initially in Mödling / Lower Austria) and Graz in 1963.

Today, the preparatory courses are run by the Austrian Exchange Service Society (OeAD), a GmbH of the Republic of Austria, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and the local universities.

As a rule, the chosen university decides which supplementary exams have to be taken, and the students are listed there as extraordinary audiences. After the positive exams, they begin their regular studies.

In addition to the range of courses and exams, the preparatory courses also support international students in their integration into the Austrian, especially academic, environment and see themselves as mediators between different educational systems, worlds and cultures. In addition, they try to establish an international network of preparatory institutions, especially those in German-speaking countries.
