The Vorwerkpark (also Vorwerk'sche Park or Parkanlage Vorwerk) is a landscape park in the Wuppertal district of Barmen , district of Lichtenplatz .

history

The Vorwerk park was set up at the beginning of the 20th century by Adolf Vorwerk (founder of the company of the same name ) as a private park for the nearby Vorwerk villa, Villa Emma, on the edge of the Barmer grounds . The villa and the oldest part of the park, the arcade, were built in 1895. The villa in the Swiss villa style at Adolf-Vorwerk-Straße 23 was the ancestral family seat and was inhabited until 1959, when it was demolished later.

There are hardly any plans or documents about the years in which the Vorwerk Park was built. The lower parks include: a quarry with a goldfish pond, a grotto with a waterfall, a bathing pond and a pump house on the Murmelbach , also known as the Marper Bach. Around 1907 the quarry was redesigned into a rhododendron park, in which the Wuppertal tree nursery and breeder Nissen was involved. Up to six gardeners are said to have been employed.

During the Second World War , as in the neighboring district, large parts of the park were destroyed. In the post-war period, cabbage, carrots and other crops were grown on the green areas. There were also fruit trees that are still standing today. After that, in 1950 new rhododendrons and hardy Japanese azaleas were planted around the newly created goldfish pond. The beds were sown with lawn again and could now be mowed again easily with a large area mower. During this time a single gardener took over the maintenance. On the occasion of an inspection of the park by the German Rhododendron Society in 1964, it says:

“… Rhododendron plantations compete in their bloom with the young and youngest hybrids of our own and foreign origins in many variations. The groups of azaleas scattered everywhere give the plants their own cheerful note with their special color nuances ... "

In the course of a family meeting of the Vorwerk in 1993, the private park was searched. A jetty was built at the goldfish pond and overgrown paths were cleared. When the heavily overgrown quarry was cut, some parts of the slope slipped off. Responsible for the restoration of the Vorwerkpark were: Planning by Calles - De Brabant, landscape architects BDLA, execution by Jakob Leonards Söhne GmbH & Co.

The shareholders of the Vorwerk company, who owned the property with the park and villa, were not interested in continuing the cost-intensive maintenance of the park. Max Jörg Vorwerk therefore set up a foundation to continue to look after the park. The land on which the Barmer Luftkurhaus , built by Adolf Vorwerk but destroyed in the Second World War, stood, was sold for financing . The building rights had to be created for the lucrative sale of the new building site - because it was designated as a forest area. According to the regulations, the board of the foundation should consist of the respective mayor of Wuppertal together with the incumbent chairman of the Barmer Beautification Association and a member of the Vorwerk family. The Barmer Beautification Association is involved, as the Barmer facilities and the Vorwerk Park border each other and the interests of the foundation and the beautification association also overlap.

In 2001, after extensive renovation, the park was unofficially opened and made accessible to the public. On May 31, 2003, the official opening of the Vorwerk Park by Max Jörg Vorwerk took place in the presence of Lord Mayor Hans Kremendahl .

description

An older quarry was included in the construction of the private park , which was converted into a blooming rock garden after the topsoil was laid. There are also numerous meadows, streams and several ponds in the park. Almost all the rocky areas are covered with bushes and trees, and rhododendron species are particularly numerous .

Over time, some rare and endangered species have settled. The lower part of the park belongs to the Murmelbachtal nature reserve . Other areas belong to the landscape protection area on the Scharpenacken .

The area is made accessible by a network of paths on which lookout points with benches have been set up. The eastern entrance from the Barmer Forest , the original entrance from the side of the villa, is designed with a 50 meter long arcade ( pergola ) on a retaining wall. There is also a stair access to the Barmer Forest, which was protected by a wrought iron gate. A stone with the year 1895 is incorporated above this gate. Originally the quarry stone wall was the border to the facilities of the beautification club.
