Life

Christian Friedrich Voss was born as the son of the Lübben publisher Johann Georg Voss (also George Voss, † 1732). He attended the city school in Lübben and then studied from 1740 to 1746 at the Berlin bookseller and newspaper publisher Johann Andreas Rüdiger , whose daughter Dorothea Henrietta he married in 1748. In the same year he opened a Berlin branch on Königstrasse (today Rathausstrasse). In 1751 the privilege to publish the Berlinische privilegirten Zeitung was transferred from Rüdiger to his son-in-law Voss. Since then it has carried the unofficial title Vossische Zeitung , which also became official in 1911. The book publisher Voss published works by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing , Friedrich II., Johann Gottfried Herder and Jean Paul as well as various magazines, including Physicalische Amustigungen (1751–1757) and Lessing's Theatrical Library (1754–1758). Voss belonged to the Freemason Lodge Zur Eintracht in Berlin.

In 1779 Voss took his eldest son Christian Friedrich Voss (1755–1795) into the company as a partner and handed over the business to him in 1791. However, this son died on April 22, 1795, two days before his father. The Vossische newspaper inherited after a long dispute Marie Friederike, nee Voss, who was married to the royal mint director Karl Gotthelf Lessing . The publisher acquired Johann Daniel Sander .
