The Vossnacker Schule (also Vosnacker Schule or Vossnacker Schule) is the building of the former Evangelical elementary school of the Vossnacken farmers used until 1958 .

Location and description

The former school house is now a residential building

The district of Vossnacken is on the outskirts of the city of Velbert and is bordered by the Deilbach in the north, east and south. The school building stands on a ridge that can be seen from afar above the Ruhr valley in the middle of the historic farms of the farmers.

The building consists of a two-storey half - timbered construction , which was erected on a rubble stone base with a vaulted cellar in 1789. In 1848 a half-timbered extension was added with a “new school facility” and finally in 1868 a second classroom made of quarry stone. At that time the former one-class school already had 100 students. In 1886 it peaked at 172 students in two classes.

After the schoolhouse was abandoned and a new building was built on the nearby Landstrasse, the building was privately restored and is now used as a residential building.

history

The old school house shortly before its closure

Lessons were held in a farmhouse on the Schwardt as early as 1707 . The farmers got a standing school in 1740 in an extension at the nearby Tackenhof. But it was only with the division of the community Vossnacker Markwaldes , which had been supervised by the Werden Abbot in the office of wood judge , in 1788 that the 14 beneficiaries decided to build a new school in order to give the children a better opportunity to teach the art of writing. The school's financier was determined by drawing lots from two underage children.

The population of the peasantry was only 270 in 1836, 60 to 70 of whom attended school. In 1888 there were 974 inhabitants with 192 students. Due to the construction of the Prince Wilhelm Railway with its railway workshops in Langenberg and the commissioning of the Hardenberg coal mines in the Asbachtal , as well as Adler , Victoria and Prince Friedrich in the Deilbachtal, there was also immigration to the remote farmers.

In 1912 the Westfälische Berggewerkschaftskasse (WBK) Bochum set up a magnetic control room in the school garden . Due to the industrialization of the area with its iron masses and stray currents from the overhead lines of the trams from the Bochum city garden, it had to be relocated. The main teacher was given the daily measurements. The control room was closed in 1946, as the increasing steel expansion of the coal pits made magnetic measurements almost impossible.

In 1958 the school moved to a new location and was finally closed in 1968.
