Water supply to Paris
In the headwaters of the Voulzie and its tributaries Durteint and Ru du Dragon , a number of springs were taken in the 1920s and diverted towards Paris in a 55-kilometer-long water pipe , the Aqueduc de la Voulzie . The aqueduct crosses the river Seine at Champagne-sur-Seine and joins the two other aqueduc de la Vanne and the Aqueduc du Loing et du Lunain west of Moret-sur-Loing . All three together represent the drinking water supply from Paris to the south.
Canal de la Voulzie
The canal, now mostly called Canal des Ormes , was to create a navigable connection from the Seine along the Voulzie to the city of Provins when construction began at the end of the 18th century. The work progressed very slowly and was completely stopped in the first half of the 20th century. The canal therefore only runs as far as Les Ormes-sur-Voulzie today and is of no importance for shipping.
Due to the withdrawal of water for the Aqueduc de la Voulzie , however, the water supply of the source rivers became so low that it was no longer sufficient for the needs of Provins and its surroundings. To compensate for this, water is now taken from the Seine via the Canal des Ormes , pumped up into the source areas and there returned to the rivers to improve the water flow.
