Vredefort is a town in Ngwathe Municipality , Fezile Dabi District , Free State Province in South Africa . In 2011 it had 1,326 inhabitants; the neighboring township of Mokwallo had 13,293 inhabitants. Vredefort is located 126 kilometers south of Johannesburg and 76 kilometers north of Kroonstad at 1,456 meters above sea level and was founded in 1876.
Known is the city by the Vredefort crater , one of the largest meteorite impact craters on earth.
