history

General Währinger cemetery

Memorial stone for the victims of the 1848 revolution

According to a decree by Joseph II , all existing cemeteries within the linear wall had to be closed for reasons of hygiene and space problems. For the burial of the dead, new cemeteries were subsequently created outside the line wall. In addition to the Sankt Marxer Friedhof , the Hundsturmer Friedhof , the Matzleinsdorfer Friedhof , the Schmelzer Friedhof and the Alten Döblinger Friedhof the Allgemeine Währinger Friedhof was built on the outskirts of Währing. It was opened in 1783 , with the cemetery intended for the dead of the Schotten parish , the Rossau parish , the Lichtental parish , the Alservorstadt parish, the general hospital and the garrison hospital . The Jewish cemetery in Währing , where the Jewish community of Vienna buried its dead, was also created on a neighboring property .

The number of dead buried here in the mid-19th century was around 3,000 to 4,000 per year. In 1844 2,998 people, in 1845 3,645 people (including 1,023 children) and in 1846 4,003 (including 984 children) were buried in the General Währinger Friedhof. Most of the dead probably came from the General Hospital. In 1844 the statistics show a number of 1,651 adults from the general hospital. In addition there were 417 adults and 330 children from the Schotten parish, 144 adults and 323 children from Lichtental and 133 military personnel from the garrison hospital. The large number of dead required several extensions to the cemetery. These were carried out in 1854 and 1872. However, after the opening of the Vienna Central Cemetery on November 1, 1874, the General Währinger Cemetery was closed. Only the neighboring Jewish cemetery was occupied until the 1980s. After the opening of the Stadtbahn on the Wiener Gürtel , a path became necessary for a faster connection between Gymnasiumstrasse and the Stadtbahn, which was ultimately laid across the cemetery. In 1923 the cemetery was finally closed completely and was the first cemetery to be converted into a park in the First Republic (1919–1934). The park opened in autumn 1923. 58 historically and culturally interesting gravestones have been preserved in a small grave grove.

The Währinger Park

An oak tree, which Mayor Jakob Reumann planted when the park opened, commemorates the opening of the Währinger Park in October 1923 . The Währinger Park was planned by city gardening director Friedrich Kratochwjle , who had the park laid out while preserving the existing trees as much as possible. A public garage under the park caused long discussions, but was ultimately implemented.

Grave grove

The grave grove with 58 preserved, historically or culturally interesting gravestones is located in the northeastern part of the park near the intersection of Semperstrasse / Schrottenbachgasse. It is fenced and can be viewed on request. These are actual graves, as the remains of the exhumed people were reburied under their tombstones in 1923. Among other things, the graves of the philosopher and politician Friedrich von Gentz , the architect Paul Wilhelm Eduard Sprenger , the composer Adalbert Gyrowetz and the theater director Josef Schreyvogel and one of his predecessors Franz Ignaz Holbein von Holbeinsberg can be found here . The graves of Giulietta Guicciardi , Dorothea von Ertmann , Raphael Georg Kiesewetter and Franz Wild are also located in this grove .
