The nature reserve near Viesebeck is located northwest of the Wolfhagen - Viesebeck district and covers around 12.4 hectares. The Wünne was designated as a nature reserve on December 6, 1992 and, together with the Dörneberg near Viesebeck, is one of two such areas near Viesebeck.

As a limestone grassland area, the Wünne has an important role in the biotope network of the rough grasslands of North Hesse . The occurrence of endangered orchid species and rare butterflies is particularly noteworthy .

The responsibility for the preservation and care of the area is shared by the Wolfhagen Forestry Office, the Agriculture Department of the Kassel district and the Upper Nature Conservation Authority at the Kassel regional council .

Just like the Dörneberg, the area has probably been inhabited since the Paleolithic and was used as a pasture for goats and sheep . In contrast to Dörneberg, however, wine could be grown on the limestone slopes of the Wünne in the Middle Ages . The Wünne was also used to extract limestone (for building stones and quicklime ), which the city of Wolfhagen still operates to a small extent today . In the Wolfhagen map sheet submitted by the Electoral Hessian General Staff in 1859 , the Wünne is depicted free of forests; it served partly as agricultural land (although the arable land was always much smaller than on Dörneberg). Over time, the area grew bushy. Today, mainly cattle are used to graze the Wünne.
