WA Rémy

WA Rémy (born June 10, 1831 in Prague as Wilhelm Mayer ; † January 23, 1898 in Graz ) was an Austrian composer and musician .

Life

The son of a lawyer attended the Prague Organ School from 1846 as a student of Carl Franz Pitsch . A close friendship connected him with August Wilhelm Ambros , Eduard Hanslick and Karl Kappel von Savenau . After completing his law studies, he entered the civil service and was first a civil servant in Pest , then in Vienna . From 1861 he devoted himself exclusively to music. From 1862 to 1870 he headed the Musikverein Graz and was among others the teacher of Ferruccio Busoni , Richard Heuberger , Wilhelm Kienzl , Emil Nikolaus von Reznicek , Richard Sahla and Felix Weingartner .

His compositions were published under the pseudonym WA Rémy (an anagram by W. Mayer).

In 2016 the pianist Carmen Stefanescu recorded several piano pieces by Rémy in Cologne. The soprano Shirin Asgari performed songs by Rémy in 2018/19 with the pianist Georg Wiedner.
