William (Bill) John Francis Jenner (chin. 詹纳 尓; * 1940 ) is an English sinologist , specialist in Chinese history and culture and translator of Chinese literature .

biography

Jenner studied Chinese in Oxford from 1958 to 1962 and wrote his dissertation on the history of Luoyang in the 5th and 6th centuries.

From 1963 to 1965 Jenner worked as a translator at the publishing house for foreign language literature in Beijing . There was u. a. From Emperor to Citizen (Vol. 1 1964, Vol. 2 1965; later editions in one volume, including one from Oxford University Press), a translation of the " autobiography " of the last Emperor of China, Puyi . He began with a translation of the novel Journey to the West .

From 1965 Jenner taught at the University of Leeds , the Australian National University and the University of East Anglia .

From 1979 to 1985 Jenner always returned to China in the summer to work on the translation of the Journey to the West and other works - u. a. by Lu Xun - to work.

His most recent project is a two-volume history of China from the Stone Age to the present day.

Jenner has two daughters and one son.
