WX Piscium (also IRC +10011 ) is a red giant of the class of OH / IR stars . The spectrum of these stars is extremely shifted into the infrared and it is believed that they are about to transition to the white dwarf . As a result, these stars are much less visible or even invisible in visible light , whereby this effect can be intensified by a disk of dust surrounding the star .
The star appears to have had a very high rate of mass loss from stellar winds in the past , the rate not being constant at all, but fluctuating widely. Over a period of about 600 years, the annual mass loss seems to have been about 10 −5 M ☉ . This phase ended 800 years ago and the loss of mass was greatly reduced to about 5 × 10 −8 M ☉ . Recently, however, the rate has increased again to around 6 × 10 −6 M ☉ .
